1981 xr 100 has no spark?

My sons bike was parked 5 yrs ago because of no spark. Recently we tried to get it going again. I figured the coil was bad and replaced it, but still no spark. I test the stator output and get 6volts of power. I checked the points and they seemed OK. when I tested for continuity the flow didn't stop when the points opened. So I figured bad points. When I took them out I retested the points for continuity and it worked fine!!! I placed them back on the plate with the stator and tested again but they still show continuity when the points are open??? I checked all the wires and nothing is exposed to the metal. Need help with this one, it's got me stumped.
